Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have 12 days to trigger Timo Werner’s release clause if they want to sign him for less than £ 50million. The German international striker’s € 55million (£ 49million) release clause at RB Leipzig expires on Monday 15 June.
Werner was persuaded to join Chelsea after receiving almost daily phone calls from Frank Lampard in recent weeks. Frank Lampard and Petr Cech went on a pre-lockdown undercover trip to Germany that helped Chelsea overtake Liverpool and Manchester United to convince Timo Werner to move to Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea plan to balance the books this summer with a spate of spending after sealing Werner’s £ 54million signing. Chelsea’s bid for salary cuts for players seems doomed after Werner’s disembarkation.
