Sunil Chhetri named among 13 strikers to choose all-time best three in AFC Cup | XtraTime
Xtra Time Web Desk: Indian football captain Sunil Chhetri was named among 13 forwards on Saturday for fans to choose the all-time best three of the AFC Cup, the continent’s second-tier club competition.
Chhetri, 36, has scored 18 goals in four AFC Cup editions since 2013 when he appeared for Churchill Brothers. He then played for Bengaluru FC in the AFC Cup in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
His best achievement was leading Bengaluru FC to second place in the 2016 AFC Cup, losing to the Air Force Club of Iraq in the final.
“An emblematic figure of modern Indian football, and a player whose 72 national team goals have given him an international profile, Sunil Chhetri has also regularly shown his great quality on the continental club scene in the AFC Cup,” AFC said on its website.
“Although he didn’t appear in the competition until his late twenties, Chhetri’s impact lasted for the best part of a decade.
“He captained Bengaluru for the 2016 final, his personal highlight coming when he scored twice in a classic semi-final to knock out defending champion Johor Darul Ta’zim.
Chhetri is currently the second-highest international scorer among active players just behind Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo with 72 strikes in 115 matches.
A host of top forwards from different countries, including Maldives legend Ali Ashfaq, made up the 13 nominations from which fans will choose three forwards through an internet poll.
“Three spots remain in our 11th AFC Cup of all time, with some of Asian football’s most iconic goal scorers vying for a spot in our fans’ dream lineup.
“Football fans from all over Asia have selected a goalkeeper, three defenders and a four-man midfielder in the previous weeks, now is the time to crown the tournament’s greatest striker, with a choice of countless worthy suitors, ”the AFC said.
With 344 AFC Cup goals between them, the 13 forwards named came from Europe, Africa, South America and of course Asia.
