IPL 2021: Devdutt Padikkal becomes third cricketer to contract COVID-19 | XtraTime
Xtra Time Web Desk: The Royal Challengers Bangalore suffered a heavy blow just days before the 2021 IPL season opener against reigning champions Mumbai Indians. RCB’s promising youngster, Devdutt Padikkal, has become the third IPL 2021 cricketer to test positive for COVID-19. Padikkal, 20, joins Nitish Rana from KKR and Axar Patel from the Delhi Capitals.
The talented Karanataka batsman was in top form in the recently concluded Vijay Hazare Trophy and became the second-highest points scorer, amassing 737 points in seven matches at an average of 147.40.
This will be of concern for the franchise as Padikkal was definitely seen as a first game for the coming season.
Meanwhile, Nitish Rana, who plays for Kolkata Knight Riders, resumed training with the others after coming back negative on Saturday.
This isn’t the first time that teams have been rocked by the new virus even before the tournament’s first ball has been played. The three-time winners of the Chennai Super Kings found themselves in a similar situation during the last tournament in the United Arab Emirates.
In addition, ten officers on the ground at Wankhede Stadium have also tested positive for COVID-19, the venue of the second game of the season between the Delhi Capitals and the Chennai Super Kings.
