I figured it was too difficult and condescending, but in reality it was my hatred for my own body that manifested itself in a knee-jerk reaction: I don’t want to see any shaky pieces. On anyone.
“But, seeing different bodies in swimsuits and sportswear over and over and over and over while browsing different sites has IN A FEW MONTHS made those bodies (and MY OWN) feel very normal and even good / desirable. / beautiful. I know that’s the idea (and the reverse is true too – that seeing all these perfect bodies for so long is the reason I hated my body). Yet the power of these images is remarkable.
I’ve worn a boring full coverage swimsuit (with belly control) from Lands’ End for years, plus a men’s XL oxford for cover-up, and now for the first time since high school, I think. , “Should I order this bikini?”
