J.D. Martinez is hitting like J.D. Martinez again and it shouldn’t be overlooked

The Red Sox slugger JD Martinez sets up an MVP level season. JD Martinez 2021 stats are elite.

As the Boston Red Sox surged, Martinez enjoyed a timely rebound campaign. He was not a factor in the AL MVP Race before the season, but that quickly changed.

JD Martinez Statistics 2021

Boston remains at the top of the West. Their offense is a nightmare for opposing pitchers this year.

While others have excelled, none are as intimidating as Martinez. Only eight players have more homers. The former Tiger is ninth in wRC + ahead Ronald Acuna Jr, MVP candidate of the NL and phenomenon of escape Yermin Mercedes.

Martinez is a late career sensation. He was not an All-Star until his late twenties, but he has since posted historic numbers. Since the start of 2017, Martinez has a 150 wRC + with 143 circuits. Only two hitters have a better score in this period (Mike trout and Aaron Judge). All 143 long balls are tied with Nelson cruz for the majority.

These numbers are excellent. Martinez is one of the best hitters of this generation. Much like Cruz, however, his impact is often overlooked. This is the downside of being a DH, which both suffer from. And it is not illegitimate.

Despite all this offensive grandeur, Martinez posted just 13.8 fWAR during the period, the same as Ronald Acuna, who played more than 150 games less. That leaves 25 hitters with more fWAR since the start of 2017, including his Red Sox teammate Alex Bogaerts.

Playing DH has an impact on the value Martinez can have, but that doesn’t mean we should underestimate his contributions. Martinez extracts the maximum value of the DH spot.

Awesome advanced numbers

After a disrupted and shortened year 2020, he’s back where the Red Sox have been waiting for him. The figures put forward in all areas are at least as good as in 2019. The withdrawal and walk rates are almost identical to its ultra-productive 2018 and 2019 seasons.

It does big damage against fast bullets with a .338 xBA. This is his best year against broken stuff since 2017, with a .541 xSLG. The swing and miss stay in his approach, but Martinez hits all types of terrain hard.

Martinez’s stats in 2021 are good read for Red Sox loyalists. It seemed like another wasted year, but if the former Diamondback can continue, they’re going to hang around until the end of the summer. There are few more destructive bats in baseball right now.

Earning MVP as a DH is an almost impossible task, especially if Shohei Ohtani stay healthy. Martinez probably won’t get much MVP love, but that shouldn’t understate the great year he has. again.

It’s a career that will age well. The production we see from Martinez is remarkable, especially after concerns about his 2020 numbers. The stats continue to jump off the page.

Si Bogaerts and Rafael Devers may continue to support the triple All-Star, the Red Sox could make a surprise playoff comeback.
