There will be a time when Virat asks Rohit to lead the side, claims Kiran More
Former Indian chief selector Kiran More has proclaimed that there will come a time when Virat Kohli would like to share his responsibility as captain of India with Rohit Sharma. He added that captain and representation in all formats is not easy, and therefore divided captaincy should work in India.
Current Indian Skipper Virat Kohli has propelled the team to new heights in all formats of the game. But in recent years, due to the tactical supremacy and great track record of Rohit sharma as the captain of T20 cricket it was suggested to take up the torch from Kohli, as the Mumbaikar is more suited for this position.
Division of captaincy can be a thing in other countries, but not often and for too long in India. The last time this happened when Kohli was leading the tests with MS Dhoni in charge of limited outfits. Fomer’s Indian glove maker Kiran More said the split captain concept should work in India as it won’t be easy for Kohli to continue to be captain and play in all formats. He even claimed that there will be a time when Virat himself wants to share the burden of the harbor master’s office with Rohit Sharma.
“It should work in India. What the senior players think about the future of the Indian team is very important. With Virat Kohli, leading three teams is not that easy and he also has to perform. And I give him credit for that because he played in all formats while being captain and winning … but I think there will be a moment when Virat Kohli will say: ‘Now that’s enough , let Rohit lead the side, ‘”More told India TV, Indian Express reported.
India’s former chief picker is no stranger to how the BCCI works. He added that whether or not the captain’s split becomes a reality will depend on the council’s vision. He added that a lot will become clear after the India tour in England.
“I think the vision of the board drives these things. I believe Rohit Sharma will have a chance soon. Virat Kohli is a wise captain who has played under MS Dhoni. How long he wants to lead the ODIs and T20s he will also think about. You will learn a lot more about these decisions after the England tour, ”More told India TV on Wednesday.
India’s next assignment will be to play New Zealand in the WTC final which starts on June 18.
