How to Sell Digital Products on Your Own Website
Are you ready to start selling digital products on your own website? It’s easier than you think! This tutorial will teach you how to launch your first online store using WordPress, start accepting payments, and make your first sales from digital products! Are you ready? Let’s do this!
Why do I recommend WordPress tho?
At the moment, there are two popular ecommerce platforms that I can recommend: Shopify or WordPress + WooCommerce.
Shopify is a fully hosted e-commerce solution. However, the downside to Shopify is that it gets quite expensive and your payment options are limited unless you pay extra fees.
This is why most of my clients choose WordPress + WooCommerce. It takes some setup, but it’s worth doing in the long run. WooCommerce is the world’s largest ecommerce platform and it is currently trusted by over 40 million users and I personally use it with all of my businesses.
I highly recommend using WordPress + WooCommerce to start your own online store and here’s what you need to do to make it happen →
Step 1: Register on Bluehost.
To create your own self-hosted WordPress website, you will need to sign up for web hosting services and register your own domain name. There are many web hosting companies out there, but I highly recommend Bluehost to all my clients. There’s a reason the majority of website owners choose Bluehost for their web hosting needs. It’s also officially recommended by the WordPres.org community itself.
Remember, if you sign up for Bluehost, but get confused for whatever reason (e.g. how to set it up, choose a plan, pricing, etc.) you can always, always email me an email and I’ll help you. . That’s what I’m here for!
Alright, so to start off, head over to Bluehost.
Click on the ‘To start‘button to use to schedule the comparison page.
To receive the cheapest price to start a website, choosing the “Basic” plan is really all you need right now.
Step 2: Choose a domain name.
After selecting your plan, you will have the option to choose a domain name that you want to use:
Enter your choice and click CONTINUE!
Step 3: Fill out the form.
Now you will be taken to a form to fill in your deets ID and personal information. Complete all required fields and proceed to your purchase information. Here you will be able to choose monthly payments if you are unable to pay in advance. However, I highly recommend signing up for at least 36 month period right now. In fact, you’ll save a lot of money this way, and you won’t have to worry about monthly payments as you grow older!
Then choose if you want to get additional services, but don’t worry if you don’t feel like you need them right now. You can always come back for all those add-ons!
Proceed with your payment information and make sure to complete your order, choose to SUBMIT all information and go to the next step to fill in your payment details and complete the order.
Step 4: Launch WordPress
All you have to do is log into your new account and start working on this website.
This part is not at all difficult. Bluehost makes it easy to build a WordPress website and that is FREE.

Step 8: Install the WooCommerce plugin
WooCommerce is one of the most popular ecommerce options for WordPress users, and with good reason. Not only does this allow you to build an eCommerce store using WordPress very simple, it also has dozens of handy extensions available that can add extra functionality to your site.
To configure the Woo-commerce plugin, follow these steps …
Log into your freshly installed WordPress dashboard.
Go to Plugins. In the left menu, hover your mouse over “Plugins”, then click “Add new”.
Look for the plugin called WooCommerce. Type “WooCommerce” in the search box and click “Search Plugins”.
The first plugin in the search results should be “WooCommerce – excellent eCommerce”. Click “Install Now”, then click “Activate”.
As soon as you activate WooCommerce, you will be taken to a setup wizard that will help you set up your online store from scratch. Make sure you choose the right settings, taking into account the type of business you will be running.
When you get to the fourth step, you will be able to choose the payment options you want to activate.
By default, WooCommerce comes with two popular payment gateways: PayPal and Stripe. You can configure each of them by accessing WooCommerce → Settings → Payment on your dashboard and look for the corresponding option at the top of the screen. Configure your Pay Pal account or register on Bandaged to start accepting debit / credit card payments immediately.
Step 9: Download your products
Once your Woo-commerce system is ready to go, go ahead and visit the PRODUCTS tab in your WordPress dashboard.
By using it, you will be able to start uploading your own products which will later be featured in the static SHOP page that the Woo-commerce plugin has set up for you. Make sure to use high quality images and informative product descriptions.
To ensure that you are creating a digital file, simply choose the “downloadable” option when creating your product.
Step 10: Start Selling
Now it’s in your hands to start making those sales! You have your Woocommerce ready, your website designed, your products uploaded – go ahead and get the word out about your new store to your audience. Isn’t that exciting ??
