Japan take 2-0 lead over Pakistan in Davis Cup tie


ISLAMABAD: Japan were too strong for host Pakistan on Matchday 1 of the Davis Cup Group I first round match.

Yosuke Watanuki beat Aqeel Khan 6-3, 6-2 without sweating much in the opening single while Kaichi Uchida won 6-4, 7-6 (7/4) over Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi in one hour and 33 minutes. .

Shintaro Mochizuki and Yosuke will play in doubles on Saturday against Qureshi and Khan before the reverse singles on Sunday.

Of the 24 meetings of World Group I and World Group II, four are taking place this weekend, with the remaining 20 scheduled for September.

Japan, whose best Davis Cup result was a runner-up in 1921, lost to Ecuador in March last year, while Pakistan were beaten by rival India last year.

The draw is played without spectators due to Covid-19 restrictions.

The eight top-ranked winning nations from World Group I matches in March-September 2021 will automatically advance to the 2022 Davis Cup.

The four lowest-ranked winners will take part in an additional knockout match in November, with the two winners advancing to the 2022 playoffs and two losers in the 2022 World Group I play-offs.

Nations losing in World Group I matches will advance to the World Group I qualifiers in 2022.
